Officers Aquitted of All Counts in Sean Bell Case

Three detectives were acquitted this morning in the fatal shooting of Sean Bell in November 2006.

In a packed courtroom in Queens State Supreme Court in Kew Gardens, Judge Arthur Cooperman ruled that the detectives -- Michael Oliver, Gescard Isnora and Marc Cooper -- bore no criminal responsibility for Bell's death or the wounding of his two friends, Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman.

Two of the three New York Police Department detectives involved in the shooting death of the unarmed Bell, who was killed in a hail of gunfire outside a Jamaica club just hours before he was to be married in 2006, had faced a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted.

As word filtered out moments after 9:15 a.m., people in the large crowd outside the courthouse began to shout and scream.

"They're saying not guilty, sisters and brothers," yelled Carl Dix, 59, of Brooklyn. "That is intolerable!"

The three undercover detectives charged in the case elected to have a judge decide their fate, rather than a jury.

The trial of the officers resulted in seven weeks of often-conflicting testimonies about the death of Bell, 23, who was killed in a 50-bullet barrage outside the Kalua Cabaret in Jamaica in the early morning of Nov. 25, 2006.

Guzman and Benefield were shot and injured.

Oliver, 36, fired at the car Bell was in 31 times. Isnora, 29, fired 11 times, Cooper, 40, fired four. Police have said that during their undercover investigation of the Queens strip club, the officers believed someone in the group with Bell had gone to the car to get a gun.

During the trial Isnora testified that following a dispute between patrons, he heard Guzman say: "Yo, go get my gun."

The officers claimed they only began shooting after Bell bumped Isnora, who had identified himself as a officer, with his car -- slamming him into an unmarked police van.

But Guzman and Benefield testified they were unaware police had been watching them --and said the gunfire erupted without any warning.

No weapon was ever found.

Oliver and Isnora had faced felony first-degree and second-degree manslaughter charges, as well as assault and reckless endangerment, and were eligible to get 25 years in state prison if they had been convicted.

Cooper faced a misdemeanor reckless endangerment charge.

If Oliver and Isnora had been convicted of felonies stemming from the incident, they faced not only the immediate loss of their jobs but also their police pensions.

City officials, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have downplayed the potential for demonstrations and conflicts in the wake of the verdict announcement.

Bloomberg said that while the NYPD and other agencies will be prepared to handle potential demonstrations, he believes there will be no violence.

A bevy of news conferences will greet the verdict.

The Rev. Al Sharpton planned a conference outside the Queens Boulevard courthouse with members of Bell's family.

In the end, all of the protesting, speeches, rallies and marches proved to be no match for the NYPD - the biggest gang in New York.

Now what?

Convicted! Wesley Snipes Sentenced To Three Years In Prison

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced the actor Wesley Snipes to three years in prison for willfully failing to file tax returns.

Snipes, who was convicted in February, received one year for each count, to be served consecutively, and an additional year of probation. The sentence was handed down by Judge William Terrell Hodges of Federal District Court.

Mr. Snipes, who apologized for his actions before the sentence was announced, showed no immediate reaction to the verdict.

The sentencing came at the end of a daylong hearing in which lawyers for Mr. Snipes argued for leniency while federal prosecutors sought the maximum penalty possible.

In a prepared statement, Mr. Snipes said: “I’m very sorry for my mistakes. I acknowledge that I have failed myself and others.” But in the statement, which ran to nearly 10 minutes, Mr. Snipes never mentioned the words “tax” or “taxes.”

A member of Mr. Snipes’s legal team said they would appeal. “We were hoping for a complete acquittal,” the lawyer, Linda Moreno, said. “I have faith in the process, and I have faith in the jury system. We will appeal.”

Welcome Home, Foxy!

She's Back!

Family and fans greeted rapper Foxy Brown on Friday outside Rikers Island as she was released from the jail after serving an eight-month sentence.

"The first place I want to go is church. I've got to get on my knees," said Brown.

Instead, Brown went shopping in Harlem, had some soul food and was driven to her childhood home in Brooklyn in a white Rolls Royce Phantom...

Her mother, Judith Marchand, presented her with smiley-face balloons and the two hugged outside the family's home in the Prospect Heights neighborhood...

... and a VH1 crew captured the reunion for an upcoming reality show -

"I did almost a year in prison, a year in prison, just because my name is Foxy Brown," she said.

Brown, whose real name is Ingrid Marchand, was sentenced in September 2007 to a year in jail for violating the terms of her probation after she was accused of hitting a woman with a cell phone. She was on probation for an August 2004 attack on two manicurists at a Manhattan nail salon. She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in the 2004 incident.

With a new album and a new reality show due out this year, let's hope Fox Boogie can stay focused. There's such of lack of good talent in the rap game right now, especially on the female side. The game needs you, Fox!

When Your Stylist Attacks Vol. 4

D. Woods: "Let's see - today I think I'll wear my pink and gold shirt with my pink and gold bag and my pink and gold Reebok's..."

We're guessing this is what Danity Kane member D. Woods said to herself when she woke up the morning she picked out this little number. There's no possible way a legit stylist could ever cosign this horrid ensemble. At least not a good one.

Wait... I just threw up a little bit in my mouth...

R. Kelly Goes Gold... LITERALLY!

We can't with this dude anymore. We wish that Robert Kelly's music was garbage so we wouldn't have to deal with him at all. Gold hair? This dude is officially GONE! We hoped this was just a result of someone having too much spare time and exploring the many interesting features that Photoshop has to offer, but alas, we were wrong. There is a fine line between genius and insanity, indeed. All we know is, this next album better be hot!

Check Your Footwork! Lanvin Footwear

Lanvin’s spring/summer '08 collection of silk, suede, mesh and metallic patent leather high-tops come with an outlandish $700 price that apparently has not been a deterrence foe sneaker aficianados. Snoop around the many sneaker-centric chat rooms around the web and it quickly becomes clear that Lanvin has become the latest brand brand of cult necessity. “I’m definitely getting two or three pairs in leather,” wrote a fellow by the name of God Save Hedi. “Need them in my life right now,” Yoh05 announced. “It has,” as someone calling himself Style Expert succinctly put it, “become an addiction.” And it isn’t all talk. “They fly out as soon as they hit the store,” said Tatsugo Yoda of Aloha Rag, a Honolulu shop that will open a New York outpost at 505 Greenwich Street this week. “They have an original design, and the use of fabric, cut and color cannot be imitated.” Barneys New York is one of the few sellers with a healthy supply, though possibly not for long. “They’re white-hot,” said Timothy Elliott, a spokesman for the store.

Lanvin high-tops are priced from $665 to $730 at Barneys New York.

Takashi Murakami Invades Brooklyn!

Guess who's coming to Brooklyn?

Popularly known as the Warhol of Japan, Takashi Murakami, 46, has earned an international reputation for merging fine art with popular Japanese anime films and manga cartoons. Intent on exploring how mass-produced entertainment and consumerism are part of art, he teamed up with the fashion house Louis Vuitton in 2003 to create brightly colored versions of the classic LV monogram on Vuitton handbags. The majority of us are most familiar with his artwork for Kanye West's recent album Graduation. Now he's put together a special exhibit of his works, which will be on display starting April 5th at the Brooklyn Museum.

The exhibit includes some 90 works, sampling Mr. Murakami’s entire whimsical world in paintings, wallpapers, colorful sculptures, drawings and a 20-minute animated video. It will consume 18,500 square feet of exhibition space spread over two floors.

The show — its title, appropriately, is “©Murakami” — includes a fully operational Louis Vuitton shop selling some of Mr. Murakami’s designs for that luxury brand. A leather strap for a cellphone carries a $220 price tag; handbags range from $1,310 to $2,210. He has designed three new patterned-canvas wall hangings just for this exhibition; printed in editions of 100 each, the first 50 will be offered at the shop for $6,000 apiece, and the rest at $10,000 apiece. Other leather goods designed for the show will be for sale too - so make sure you bring your credit cards!

“©Murakami” opens on Saturday and continues through July 5 at the Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, at Prospect Park; (718) 683-5000.

You know we're not going to miss this!

The Pixel Couch by Christian Zuzunaga

Ladies and gentlemen - meet the Pixel Couch.

Royal College of Art graduate (UK) Cristian Zuzunaga has devised a fabric based on a 'pixel' concept, which some sources say is being produced by Danish manufacturer Kvadrat and sold through Italian furniture retailer Moroso. We contacted them however and they said that at this time there are no plans to produce this interesting piece of furniture. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in the future...

Let's hope they'll change their minds. We need this in our living room!
