Haitians Forced To Eat Dirt To Survive

With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest can't afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies.

Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central plateau.

The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a regular meal.

Food prices around the world have spiked because of higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation and transportation.
Prices for basic ingredients such as corn and wheat are also up sharply, and the increasing global demand for biofuels is pressuring food markets as well.

The problem is particularly dire in the Caribbean, where island nations depend on imports and food prices are up 40 percent in places.

The global price hikes, together with floods and crop damage from the 2007 hurricane season, prompted the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency to declare states of emergency in Haiti and several other Caribbean countries.

Caribbean leaders held an emergency summit in December to discuss cutting food taxes and creating large regional farms to reduce dependence on imports.

A reporter sampling a cookie found that it had a smooth consistency and sucked all the moisture out of the mouth as soon as it touched the tongue. For hours, an unpleasant taste of dirt lingered.

Assessments of the health effects are mixed. Dirt can contain deadly parasites or toxins, but it can also strengthen the immunity of fetuses in the womb to certain diseases, said Gerald N. Callahan, an immunology professor at Colorado State University who has studied geophagy, the scientific name for dirt-eating.

WOW. What is this world coming to? The government is so busy fighting wars that it apparently has no time to help people who can't even afford to eat. Sad. So sad. Remember to vote everyone. It's more important than you think...

Has Lil Wayne Lost It?

There's a fine line between insanity and genius, and Lil' Wayne undoubtedly stumbles across both sides. Just hours after his release from jail, he performed at a venue in Richmond, VA. While on stage, Weezy chose to get some things off his chest, particularly towards his own entourage. Here's what he had to say:

"When your friends turn their back on you, they tell you one thing, say they’re gonna be there for you, and then when things get to that point, muthaf-kers end up looking like a damn...[audio unclear]... I just want all these muthaf-kers that been with me, that ain’t gon’ never been here again….to know that, I did it for y’all. So when I’m not doing it for y’all no mo’….Die."

How awkward was that moment? LOL. And there's more. Apparently later on, he continues by saying, "I don’t need none of those muthaf-ers, I got you!" while addressing the audience but pointing at his entourage. He allegedly even asked the crowd to join in screaming "f*ck you" to his own crew! In the midst of all that, he also touched somewhat on recent rumors of drug abuse. His response was, umm, a little disheartening to say the least...

Have a look for yourself.

Btw, cracking up at the die-hard fan in the background!

Wait A Minute, That's No Soda Machine...

This statement may be on the brink of incrimination, but the person responsible for this idea is GENIUS! Effective January 28th, 2008, the state of California officially approved the use of vending machines for medicinal marijuana distribution. That's right - those with a prescription will be able to retrieve the bud of their choice from an AVM (Anytime Vending Machine), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week under the supervision and/or protection of round-the-clock security guards. The first two dispensaries out of Los Angeles were activated today and are said to be fully operational. Damn, technology sure has come a long way! Anyway, here's how the process works: Customers must first bring in their prescription for approval. They will then be fingerprinted and photographed, to ensure their identity is matched at the AVM. After which, they will receive a pre-paid credit card equipped with their profile data. Upon selection, they can choose a dosage of either 3.5 or 7 grams, and one of five strains of their favorite Mary Jane, including OG Cush and Grandaddy Purple (LMAO!). Once complete, the marijuana is then dispensed in capsule form, in vacuum-sealed packages. Customers are limited to just one ounce per week, which I guess is more than enough for "medicinal purposes," lol. On another note, can you imagine one of these machines in the hood? What? Free weed??? All hell would break loose! But more importantly, does insurance cover this? Inquiring minds NEED to know...

Artist Spotlight: Takashi Murakami

By now, most people are probably familiar with the cover of Kanye West's latest album, Graduation...

But many people may not know the man behind the now famous artwork. His name is Takashi Murakami, and despite whether or not you know of him, he is a BIG deal in the art world.

Considered by many art aficianados as one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking Japanese artists of the 1990's, Murakami's work ranges from cartoon-like paintings to quasi-minimalist sculptures, giant inflatable balloons, performance events, factory-produced watches, T-shirts, and other products, many emblazoned with his signature character, Mr. DOB.

Takashi Murakami was born in Tokyo in 1963 and received his BFA, MFA and PhD from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He has had recent solo shows at Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York (2003); Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris (2002); Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2001); Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2001); and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris (2001).

In addition to his work as an artist, Takashi Murakami is a curator, entrepreneur, and a student of contemporary Japanese society. In 2000, Murakami curated an exhibition of Japanese art titled Superflat, which acknowledged a movement toward mass-produced entertainment and its effects on contemporary aesthetics. Murakami is also internationally recognized for his collaboration with designer Marc Jacobs to create handbags and other products for the Louis Vuitton fashion house.

Murakami's work has been exhibited in prestigious museums all over the world, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and a recent solo retrospective exhibition at the Bard College Museum of Art. Through his work, Murakami has played with these oppositions in East and West, past and present, high art and low culture while remaining consistently amusing and accessible. His work morphs the worlds of popular contemporary Japanese cartoons and historic Japanese painting (he is classically trained, with a Ph.D. in the traditional nihon-ga style). His recurring character, Mr. DOB, appears on t-shirts, posters, key-chains, etc. world-wide.

Billionaire Takes Us Out Of This World With Virgin Galactic

“2008 will really be the year of the spaceship,” said Sir Richard Branson, the British serial entrepreneur and owner of Virgin Records at the heavily attended press conference at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. Sir Richard, who founded a company, Virgin Galactic, that promises to take tourists on brief trips to the edge of space, was there to show off the sleek pod of a spacecraft and its spidery carrier plane.

WhiteKnight, a two-fuselage, four-engine plane in its new incarnation, will ferry the smaller spacecraft high into the sky and release it. The spacecraft pilot then fires the craft’s rocket engine, which burns a combination of nitrous oxide and a rubber-based solid fuel, and shoots the vehicle upward to an altitude of more than 62 miles, the realm of black sky.

Once there, the pilot is to activate the craft’s innovative feathered wing, which rotates into a position that greatly increases aerodynamic drag and slows the craft for a glider landing back on earth.

About 100 of the company’s prospective passengers were on hand at the unveiling in Manhattan Wednesday. Stephen Attenborough, the company’s liaison with its clients — or, as the company calls them, its astronauts — said that Virgin Galactic had received 200 firm reservations and $30 million in deposits.

I assure you, folks. This is NOT a hoax. If any of you have ever seen the MTV Cribs episode with Sir Richard Branson giving a tour of his island (yes, he owns his own PRIVATE ISLAND), then you know this dude has serious paper. So what's left to do when your net worth is already in the billions? Why not build a spaceship and fly people to space? Must be nice to have that kind of money.

We're currently making arrangements to take the trip. It may be a while, but we'll get there. Don't worry, you know we'll save you a seat!

Danity Kane Covers King Magazine

Unfortunately, this is the cover for the upcoming issue of King Magazine. Did I miss something here? Are these chicks hot enough to be on magazine covers? The whole "Making the Band" thing was cute, but these broads have always been lame to me. Sorry Diddy. Show Stoppin'? Pure garbage. If it weren't for the MTV exposure, we all know they wouldn't even have sold ten records. I'm so not looking forward to their new project - at all.

And as if that wasn't enough...

This one gets her own "limited edition" cover? Imagine us running out to buy that. Good luck.

We still got love for King Magazine, though. Waddup, Datwon? Holla at me!

Erykah Badu's New Album Cover

After a long hiatus, Ms. Badu is finally back!!! Before there was Jill Scott, India.Arie or Amy Whinehouse, there was Erykah. And judging by the looks of this cover for her upcoming album entitled New Amerykah, she's back with a vengeance!
