Hip-Hop artist/activist, Mos Def along with Common, Talib Kweli, MC Lyte, Pharoahe Monch and countless other artists, organizations and student leaders from over 100 campuses, called for a National Student Walk-Out, today at 12 noon central. This was all in an effort to support the "Jena 6", who are being denied their human rights by the Louisiana criminal justice system. Students were asked to walk out of their classrooms and join rallies either on campus or at designated areas. Everyone, marching or not, was asked to wear black today to show solidarity and conscientiousness. As Mos Def stated "This is the time for Black people to support the Jena 6, and call attention to the unequal treatment the criminal Justice system is dishing out not only in Jena, Louisiana but across this nation...we all live in Jena."
I couldn't have said it better myself. Kudos to everyone taking a stand against this blatant act of racism. For more information on the Jena 6 case or to find ways you can get involved, go to www.mxgm.org, changethegame.org or freethejena6.org.
